Over a third of job applicants use ChatGPT when applying for a job

The number of professionals using generative artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT, when applying for a job has increased since last year.

Hays, the world’s specialist leader in workforce solutions and recruitment, asked over 15,000 respondents whether they had used ChatGPT when applying for a job, 39% said they had used the generative AI tool to help with their CV/resume, which is a 13% increase from 2023.

The perception of using generative AI tools for the job application process remains largely positive as 40% said it is an innovative use of the tech and 39% think it is acceptable if it is used to refine their application. Whereas 18% of respondents said it was dishonest and should be limited. It is no surprise that the positive sentiment has remained as more jobs in various industries are adapting AI into their work due to ongoing digitalisation.

James Milligan, Global Head of Technology at Hays comments:

“CVs[/resumes] and are a great opportunity for organisations to learn more about a candidate, so authenticity is key for candidates. While generative AI has the capability to efficiently complete repetitive or template tasks, it has several limitations when it comes to replicating the human touch. The technology is there to assist you but use it wisely, a CV needs to be a fair representation of you, and it needs to convey your passion and enthusiasm. AI can complement your efforts, but preparation and understanding of the role remain crucial.”

An AI resume builder can identify essential keywords and phrases from the job description relevant to the candidate’s background and qualifications. However, without personalisation the CV runs the risk of sounding generic, while also sounding similar to other candidates using the same AI tool. The technology is known to make mistakes and even lack creativity, and it can miss the mark on displaying emotional intelligence.

There are ways that professionals can use the tool to great effect when preparing for job interviews. For instance, generative AI can be useful in generating ideas, gathering information, and structuring answers. The tool can generate job-specific questions that candidates can face in an interview, along with providing feedback to candidate’s answers.

James continues:

"While it might be convenient and can help with writer’s block, always remember that personalising and tailoring your documents is key. Recruiters and hiring managers read hundreds of applications every day and it can sometimes be obvious when someone has used AI to write their CV[/resume]. When it comes to critical thinking, human nuance and personality, no technology can replicate it yet."

Make sure to check out support like CV guides and interview guides out there to help compose the most suitable application. Always make sure you show your understanding of the job description and compose your application accordingly so that it's tailored to the job and the company, explaining why you are the perfect candidate for the role.
